Original oil on canvas with frame size 42"x50"x2".
“After the first snow on the White Mountain,
The gray light fills the autumn frost.”
I went to White Mountain, NH last October to paint. The first snow was a big surprise that I never experienced before. When looking for a landscape to paint. I look for chaos. Chaos in nature is immediately challenging and forces me to impose some type of order on my perception of the site. When I find a scene that provides that type of challenge, I return to it over and over again, both physically and mentally in the studio, continually reaching for new insights.
I like to paint the complexity of colors with a variety of strokes, layer after layer. From start to finish, each painting may take more than a month. I paint mainly with the palette knife to produce heavy textures and occasionally, in my final touches, use a brush.
